Lesson 3 - Dialogue : L’école (school)

Madame Dupuis et Monsieur Martin parlent de leurs enfants. Monsieur Martin est américain. Il n’est pas très au courant des questions scolaires en France. Mrs. Dupuis and Mr. Martin are talking about their children. Mr. Martin is an American. He is not up to date on questions of schooling in France.
Mme Dupuis: Où mettrez-vous vos enfants ? Where will you be sending your children?
M. Martin: Nous allons peut-être les faire inscrire au lycée. We might enroll them in the lycée.
Mme Dupuis: Pourquoi ne les enverriez-vous pas à l'école américaine? Why don’t you send them to the American school?
M. Martin: Parce que nous préférons qu'ils apprennent bien le français. Les vôtres? Because we prefer that they learn French well. And yours?
Mme Dupuis: Cette année ils vont tous à l'école. This year they are all going to school.
M. Martin: Même Françoise? Even Françoise?
Mme Dupuis: Mais oui, elle entre au jardin d'enfants. Yes, she is entering kindergarten.
M. Martin: Déjà? Quel âge a-t-elle donc? Already? How old is she then?
Mme Dupuis: Elle aura cinq ans en janvier. She'll be five in January.
M. Martin: Est-ce qu'elle y restera toute la journée? Will she stay there all day?
Mme Dupuis: Non, j'irai l'accompagner le matin et Jacqueline la ramènera à midi. No, I'll take her in the morning and Jacqueline will bring her back at noon.
M. Martin: Quel travail vous aurez pour que les enfants soient prêts à l'heure. What a job you'll have to get the children ready on time.
Mme Dupuis: Pas tant que ça. Cette année, Michel et Jean seront pensionnaires. Not that much. This year Michel and Jean will be boarding.
M. Martin: Cela me parait très bien. En quelle classe entrent-ils? That seems fine to me. What grade are they going into?
Mme Dupuis: Michel en quatrième et Jean en sixième. Michel in fourth and Jean in sixth.
M. Martin: Michel n'est-il pas l'aîné? Isn't Michel the older?
Mme Dupuis: Si, vous oubliez qu'en France, on commence par la onzième. Vos enfants ont-ils déjà pris des leçons de français? Yes, you forget that in France they start with the eleventh. Have your children already taken French lessons?
M. Martin: Pas encore. Connaîtriez-vous quelqu'un qui puisse leur donner quelques leçons? Not yet. Would you know somebody who could give them a few lessons?
Mme Dupuis: Non, mais à l'ambassade on pourrait vous indiquer un professeur. No, but at the Embassy they could suggest a teacher.
M. Martin: C'est une bonne idée. Je vous remercie beaucoup. That's a good idea. Thank you very much.
Mme Dupuis: Vous pourrez vous informer par téléphone. You can find out by phone.
M. Martin: Oh! Ce n'est pas loin. Je vais en profiter pour y aller maintenant. Oh! It's not far. I’m going to take advantage of it and go there now.
